I had no idea what a poetry slam was before today but I read a lot about it on Wikipedia and found it to be an interesting concept. It is a competition where poets read or recite the poems that they have written and then they are judged on a number scale by members in the audience. It started at the "get me high" lounge in Chicago and has since spread all over the world.
